One Set. Suburban Lounge Room
The Present
25-30 minutes
Jim and Mary Wallace, a middle class, middle-aged couple are living quietly in the suburbs until the afternoon when Jim opened the door to a stranger who collapsed into the hall. Jim helped the stranger to a chair in the lounge and that's when the trouble began. The stranger just sat there in a dazed silence. He failed to respond to any question. He just sat in a dazed silence looking straight ahead of him. A Doctor was called who phoned for police assistance. A neighbour called in and added a further complication. Then a female officer of a Federal Government Department arrived. Then others followed, including a fireman, a door-knocking religious type, and a social worker. Soon we had enough people stirring the pot to create a comedy of errors. The lounge room was as busy as Central Station at peak hour. This simple allegory of Australian society to-day gives us both a good laugh and reason to pause and reflect on who we really are.
